What's
New?
Carly Marconi part of Missions Team to Romania

Who: Southeastern University Romania Missions Team
Included two SEU faculty and eight Undergraduate students...total of ten people
What: 10 day Missions trip, to the Roma Gypsy People
When: May 7-16, 2011
Where: Tinca, Romania - 4 hours southeast of Budapest, Hungary
Why: I was the documentarian...I took 4,068 pictures and video that I compiled into a 15 min video. We taught the first week of an 8 week curriculum designed for the Roma children to teach them about health and wellness. Their society does not focus on importance of a healthy body. We used 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 which talks about the body being a temple of the Holy Spirit.
The school is a day school with approx 120 students ages 3 to 14 enrolled. It is lead by the Pentecostal Church and a minister named Pastor Caba.
Each day we taught the curriculum, it involved part lecture, arts and crafts, and hands on teaching them how to brush their teeth and wash their hands. The children applied it right away. At first it was very sad because they thought our nails were fake because of how clean they were. Many of the children had bleeding mouths from lack of care.
This is the first group of Gypsy children being educated. The goal is to give them hopes and dreams of moving beyond the society they live in so that they do more than beg and steal what is not theirs.
It was truly a life changing experience. I am so thankful for the support of the church. I hope to go back someday.

Farewell Starr!
On July 31, 2011 we said a bittersweet goodbye to our organist and music director, Starr Fioca, in a wonderful musical celebration. Starr served us for ten years as organist and for the past two years as music director during our time of transition from Pastor John Ranney to assorted supply pastors, to interim Pastor Glenn Ludwig and finally transitioning to Pastor Eric Evers in 2010. It was a challenge to handle the many styles and personalities and Starr did it with aplomb. Although her retirement is well deserved, we will sincerely miss her.
As a final tribute to Starr, the choir led the congregation in singing special humorous "Starr Songs" with lyrics written by our talented poet-laureate, Bethel Crockett. Bethel is a member of the choir and pinch-hits as backup pianist for worship. The last two short offerings were a more serious thank you to a special music director.
These special lyrics, most of which have special meaning to Starr and the choirs, are presented in .pdf format for your enjoyment. Can't open .pdf files? The .pdf format is viewable with free software - Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't have this, you can download it for free here.
